American Museum of Natural History ly by Stobaeus (4.20.34 Hense, 444), who drew from Plutarch’s Περ ρωτος (fr.134 Sandbach, 81 [Teubner] / 250 [Loeb]), but, regarding the lines that interest us, also by Plut. Amatorius 763B. To begin with, Stobaeus’ reading (εσω δ ) makes good sense, but is grossly unmetrical (iambic trimeter with five long syllables in a row). Nearly all the deviations from Bekker follow Lorimer; to avoid complicating the notes unduly, where I have followed Lorimer against Bekker and the mss. are fairly equally divided, I have used the abbreviations “Bekk.” and “Lor.” without listing the mss.

ΑΛΕΑΔΑΙ. Aleus, king of Tegea, was warned by the Delphic oracle that if his daughter had a son that grandson would kill his own sons. He therefore made his daughter Auge priestess of Athena, so that she could not marry. The twenty-three letters preserved by Stobaeus are strikingly different. A few of the addressees overlap with those in the main collection, for example Euphrates, Dio, and Apollonius’s brothers (82, 90, 94, 95), but most are persons who appear neither in the other collections nor in the Life, and none can be identified. J also follows the recent editors in inserting sub-divisions within the longer letters and within the chapters of Eusebius, neither of which was in the earlier Loeb.
